This report, compiled by Dr. Graham Wild and Dr. Glenn Baxter from RMIT University and John Murray of Edith Cowan University, has discovered that pilots aren’t the main issue when it comes to crashes. In fact, nearly two-thirds of the 150 cases the researchers studied over a 10-year period could be traced back to “technical problems.”
While this is certainly a relief for pilots who have crashed through no fault of their own, these findings are disturbing for drone enthusiasts. Dr. Wild explained in a press release that this issue is becoming more relevant as the hobby increases in popularity.
“Drones are being used for a wide range of tasks now and there are a lot of day-to-day activities that people want to use them for – delivering pizzas and packages, taking photos, geosurveying, firefighting, and search and rescue,” Dr. Wild said.”It’s essential that our safety regulations keep up with this rapidly-growing industry.”
Growing demand for drones highlights risk
While the FAA and other regulatory bodies have been working hard to create rules governing how drones are used, it’s clear that there needs to be some sort of protection for pilots whose drones cause physical damage due to technical issues. The FAA has estimated that there will be around 4.3 million personal drones in the U.S. by 2020.
This is a fantastic hobby that’s only getting better as technology advances, and hopefully developments in the field will work toward lowering the number of errors that cause crashes.
